Die Handlung spielt im Jahr 1980 in Texas, als Candy Montgomery (Jessica Biel) scheinbar ein völlig normales und glückliches Leben führt: Sie hat einen liebevollen Ehemann mit einem guten Job, zwei reizende Kinder und ein nettes Haus in einer netten Nachbarschaft. Umso schockierender und unverständlicher ist die Tatsache, dass die junge Frau eines Tages zur Axt greift und ihre beste Freundin (Melanie Lynskey) aus der Kirchengemeinde brutal tötet – an einem Freitag, den 13.
