Rumstationen Babylon 5, universets sidste chance for fred. Stationen er nemlig en diplomatisk central, hvor repræsentanter for alle racer kan mødes og forhandle på neutral grund. En god idé, men i praksis en del mere kompliceret end som så. Hver race har sin egen dagsorden, og hvis de ikke er enige, er det jo en del nemmere at angribe først, end det er at forhandle. Stationen bliver drevet af en fast stab fra Jorden: Commander Jeffrey Sinclair, Security Chief Michael Garibaldi, Lieutenant Commander Susan Ivanova og Chief Medical Officer Dr. Stephen Franklin. Grunden til navnet - Babylon "5"- er, at dette er den femte Babylon-station. De 3 første blev ødelagt af ukendte kræfter, mens den fjerde station simpelthen forsvandt. Ikke just betryggende.
